Picture this: It’s a week before Christmas, and Christmas will be the one holiday you will have off from work this year. A coworker approaches you and asks you if you have the day off. “Yes,” you reply. “Great, can you work for me? You’ll get paid overtime for working the holiday!” You think about it for a few seconds. You picture your significant other, your kids, or your immediate family members spending quality time together, but before consulting with your loved ones, you respond. “Sure, I can work for you."

This was Monica and me for a few years after getting our first nursing jobs. We sacrificed a lot of moments with each other because we were living as if we could afford the things we couldn’t. We were going on lavish vacation after lavish vacation.

Part of the reason we moved to California is because we had enough of that lifestyle. We wanted freedom from our workplace and to spend quality time with each other, our kids, family, and friends.

Look at all these significant people in your life and think about the things you will miss out on with them because you are living like Monica and I were living years ago.

It doesn’t matter how much this overtime paycheck will look like; you must save the overtime for another time. Nine in ten Americans say they celebrate Christmas, and this time of the year will leave you and your loved ones with lasting memories, whether you’re religious or not.

So, stay home or go out this holiday season with those who mean the most to you, and cherish these moments because it may be the last time you’ll ever get to spend with them, and that will be a regret that will live on with you forever.
