1. Monica’s pay was $76 for 2 weeks!
One thing Monica and I always aim for is transparency. There are nurses on social media who constantly brag about how much money they make, but they never discuss times when they're financially struggling. In February, we had one of our highest-earning months, both at our jobs and in our business.
As you can see, we brought in a combined gross of $34,282.72 from our jobs and $5,297.59 from our business, which includes social media and the sale of our spreadsheets.
Had we continued to have epic months like that for the rest of the year, we would have grossed $474,963.72 by year's end. But that sure didn't last. Kaiser has been reducing the number of shifts they offer per diem nurses. Instead, they're increasing the hiring of benefited and travel nurses. In fact, our department (the ED) has seen its lowest vacancy rate (less than 8%) since the hospital was established.
Monica’s Earnings YTD
Monica did not work from March 24 to April 6 but still earned $75.95 due to a paycheck error made in a previous pay period. This also means she only worked 3 shifts from March 24th to April 20th. Crazy! And those shifts were not even scheduled by staffing! Her coworker asked her to pick up those shifts so she could take time off from work.
Combined W2 Earnings 2024
Despite this hiccup, as of April 20th, we still managed to earn an average net income of $14,228 per month. And when you take into account how many hours we have to put in to earn that income, we are averaging a combined 35.02 hours of work per week.
If we continue at this “sluggish” pace, we're projected to earn at least $246,439.79 from our jobs by the end of the year.
Now, let's shift focus to our business income.
Business income 2024 (April is still ongoing)
If you take our business income into account, we are earning an average of at least $3,399 per month. If you take this into account, we're on track to earn at least $287,227 by year's end while working just 35.02 combined hours per week—or an average of 17.51 hours each.
2. The Travel Nurse Practitioner Making Bank
Travel Nurse Practitioners are a thing and I bet you don't know much about them. They usually go by Locum Tenens NPs, and the NP I recently interviewed is one of the best in the game. She has learned the best techniques to get free flights, rental cars, hotel stays, and more as a traveling NP. Watch the video here.
3. Not All Of California Is Unaffordable
As mentioned in our previous email, if you’re itching to move here but have no idea which city makes the most sense for you and your family, have no fear; we’re here to answer those questions. In our first episode, we drove through Elk Grove, California, and toured a few homes in the $500k to $600k range. This is our second stop in our series "Is California Affordable?" and once again we visit Elk Grove, CA, with a budget between $500k and $600k. 4. Only 28% of Nurses Are Extremely Satisfied
According to some federal data I stumbled upon, job satisfaction among nurses took a nosedive from 2018 to 2022.
I mean, seriously, it's pretty shocking.
This survey talked to about 49,234 nurses. And what did they find? Only 28% of nurses were extremely satisfied with their job in 2022. That's down from 40% back in 2018.
But wait, it gets worse.
The number of nurses saying they were moderately dissatisfied with their jobs shot up from 9% to 15% during the same time frame.
If you take all of this into account, it begins to make sense why more nurses are leaving the profession, starting a side hustle or business, or retiring early.
